Hydroquinone acts by inhibiting the enzymatic oxidation of tyrosine to 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalamine (DOPA) and subsequently to melanin thereby producing a reversible depigmentation of the skin. At the beginning of the treatment, melanin excretion increases transiently. A decrease in skin color is seen in about 4 weeks. Depigmentation normally lasts for 2-6 months but is reversible. Darker lesion repigment faster than lighter lesions, because the ability of the sun to darken lesions is much greater than that of Hydroquinone to lighten them. Care should be taken to avoid sunlight.

Indicated for the gradual bleaching of the hyperpigmented skin conditions such as chloasma, melasma, freckles, lentigo and other unwanted areas of melanin hyperpigmentation.

Prior history of sensitivity or allergic reaction to any of the ingredients of

Eslite-15.

Before using Eslite-15, test for skin sensitivity is to be carried out by applying a small amount of Eslite-15 to an unbroken patch of skin and check in 24 hours. Minor redness is not a contraindication, but where there is itching or vesicle formation or excessive inflammatory response, further treatment is not advised. Close patient supervision is recommended. Contact with the eyes should be avoided. If no bleaching or lightening effect is noted after 2 months of treatment, use of Eslite-15 should be discontinued. Eslite-15 is formulated for use as a skin-bleaching agent and should not be used for prevention of sunburn.

It is also not known whether hydroquinone can cause fetal harm when used topically on a pregnant woman or affect reproductive capacity. It is not known towhat degree, if any, topical hydroquinone is absorbed systemically. Topical hydrpquinone should be used in pregnant women only when clearly indicated.

It is not known whether topical hydorquinone is absorbed or excreted in human milk. Caution is advised when topical hydroquinone is used by a nursing mother.

Safety and effectiveness in children below the age of 12 years have not beenestablished.

No systemic adverse effects have been reported. Occasional hypersensitivity (localized contact dermatitis) may occur.

There have been no systemic reactions from the use of topical hydroquinone in Eslite-15. However, treatment should be limited to relatively small areas of the body at one time since some patients experience a transient skin reddening and a mild burning sensation, which does not preclude treatment.

Eslite-15 cream should be applied to the affected area and rubbed in, twice daily or as directed by the physician.
